Project Review: Orelle Restaurant, Cafe & Bar

September 9, 2025

Placed in the tallest building of Birmingham, 103 Colmore, the sumptuous jewel of a restaurant, Orelle, is a landmark within a landmark!

Complete with marble floors, panoramic views and breathtaking atmosphere it is the place to see and be seen.

Offering a contemporary take on classic French recipes, Orelle was opened in 2022 by executive head chef Chris Emery, who designed the menu to showcase the best of British produce, and celebrate the stories behind locally-sourced ingredients. After a 2 year stint, he handed the reigns over to Chef Kiran Suvarna in 2024, who has been injecting a fresh experience, that includes Suvarna’s time in Singapore & India, to new menus that will consequently enhance the city’s restaurant scene.

Orelle is not only celebrated for its cuisine, but their the cocktails are also a huge hit. Some of Birmingham’s finest mixologists craft classic and innovative cocktails and allow you to enter another realm of reality high above the daily grind.

The restaurant, that draws inspiration from the French words for gold(or) and her (elle) plus the name of a French mountain village, really does transport you to another world, with unparalleled 360 degree views of the city and beyond.

Set up by The Evolve Collection, who runs a large number of restaurants & bars (many of which are very well known addresses) and one hotel in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Birmingham, Paris and New York, Orelle was an addition to a group that is renowned for creating the right environment to enjoy new tastes.

Doone Silver Kerr, a design practice experienced in the commercial, hospitality and residential sectors were briefed to create a fine-dining restaurant on the 24th floor of 103 Colmore, with a ground floor café/bar offering a more informal experience during the daytime and a glamorous bar at night.

The design was inspired by the site’s banking heritage as well as the historic Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham; on a practical level, the original cast aluminium NatWest banking doors were also incorporated into the design, and can be seen in the cafe/bar on the ground floor. The abstract triangular pattern based on the old NatWest identity also takes centre stage amongst finely detailed golden metalwork, and richly veined marble floors
throughout.

Parla was tasked to bring alive designs for the loose furniture, booths, and waiter stations. Working alongside interior design firm Ward Robinson, we were inspired and excited to create and manufacture pieces that were jewel like and really eye catching.

Bringing in our expertise of blending different materials together in harmony, we worked on bespoke pieces that incorporated upholstery, wood and metal. Developing the designs for the dining chairs, carver chairs, tub chairs and booths, we made sure that not only do they pop out design wise, but they also are very comfortable ergonomically.

It really has been a please to make a mark in this iconic setting.
